What to Expect on the Trail
Starting near Pahrump, Wheeler Pass begins with a relatively easy dirt road before transitioning into rocky and rutted terrain as you climb in elevation. Along the way, you’ll pass through juniper and pinyon pine forests, abandoned mining ruins, and open plateaus offering spectacular views of the surrounding valleys.
One of the highlights of the trip is reaching the Wheeler Pass Summit at around 7,700 feet. From here, you’ll have an incredible vantage point overlooking the Spring Mountains and the Mojave Desert below.
Descending toward Cold Creek, expect steeper terrain and loose rocks. This part of the trail requires careful navigation, especially after rain or snow. Keep an eye out for wild horses, as this area is home to a thriving mustang population!
